Kia is on a spree of launching new vehicles under its brand name. It’s been close to a year since Kia set-off with its first product for the Indian market, the Seltos. That was their recipe for success and it has been doing really well for itself. Few months into the success of the Seltos, Kia steps into an unchartered segment with the Carnival. Kia is now finally stepping into the already competitive space of compact SUVs with the Sonet.
Kia’s third model for India will come in the form of the Sonet. It was shown in concept form at the 2020 Auto Expo; the Kia Sonet will share its underpinnings with its cousin, the Hyundai Venue. Kia, however, has pulled out all the stops to make sure the Sonet can go one up on the Hyundai and other compact SUV rivals like the Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300.
Kia did put in some effort from distinguishing it from its sibling, the Venue and it shows. On the cosmetic front, there is no way one can tell it’s essentially the same car which the parent company sells in the Indian market. On the outside, it surely carries the typical family look with the Tiger nose grille and it looks chunky. It’s not a timeless design language per say, but it’s more of a contemporary language to keep up with today’s times.
The interior hasn’t been revealed in full but from what’s been revealed, it looks promising. Part of the features list will be a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the UVO Connect connected-car tech, and a Bose audio system, to name a few.
What’s more interesting are the powertrain options on offer. While the Kia Sonet will get the same engine options as the Hyundai Venue, there will also be the option of a 6-speed manual gearbox and an intelligent manual transmission (iMT) as well. An iMT features auto-rev matching and is designed to make driving easier for new drivers by eliminating the need to use the clutch while shifting gears. What’s more, the Kia Sonet diesel will also come with the option of a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Expect prices of the Sonet to be between Rs 8 to 12 Lakh rupees and it is expected to be launched sometime in the second half of 2020.
