We were at the launch and below is our quick take on the SUV.
One look at the SUV and you realize that the new Discovery Sport is an evolution over the original Discovery Sport design. In our opinion, it is a more practical, intuitive and modern design from the JLR line-up.
Front up, gone are the bi-xenon oval DRL infused headlamps, and in come new premium LED headlights with Daytime Running Lights and rear LED lights. They overall enhance the front fascia of the car. The vehicle also sports running turn indicators incorporated smartly inside the DRLs.
The front bumper is far more muscular than the vehicle it replaces, and the R Design variant gets sporty skirtings to match the character.
Nothing much has changed on the sides and you still know from far off that this is a Discovery Sport, which in our opinion is a nice thing to happen. 18-inch alloy wheels dawn the side and fill up the side wheel arches quite well. The alloy design though does not excite and look boring at the first glance, the only saviour is the Gloss Sparkle Silver Finish that they come in.
Moving to the rear, it now houses a new design element for the taillights, which of-course are LED’s and the design is in sync with the front headlight structure. Brushed aluminium finished skirting at the rear beautifully breaks the overall monotony of the design, which otherwise looks like the vehicle it replaces
The desirability of the exterior design continues into the cabin. The refined interiors lend a sense of calm, as one enters the vehicle. The interior delivers elevated levels of comfort, enhanced stowage space and a new SportShift gear Selector crafted from premium materials which have been responsibly sourced. The bold horizontal and vertical lines coupled with the fixed panoramic roof, further enhance the engaging interiors.
The first thing that you notice is the all new steering wheel, which is carried forward now from the other Range Rover vehicles and come plush with a touch sensitive pad which opens up options on the touch pad basis the function chosen. Glance behind the steering wheel and now you also get the digital driver cockpit, which can be customizable to the likings. The gear knob is new, gone is the rotary dial and in comes the traditional gear knob shifter, which will have a mix bag reaction we believe. Speaking on the gearbox, the Discovery Sport is mated to a 9-speed gearbox sourced from ZF, and the vehicle comes with various drive modes on offer.
The infotainment screen is new and now it is 10.25 inches and comes with LandRover’s latest Touch Pro System. The top end variant comes with 11 speakers, 380 W, Meridian Sound System complete with a Subwoofer and Amplifier, the lower variants however have to do with LandRover’s 180 W, 6 speaker system. Android Auto and Apple Car Play however are a standard feature. Speaking about features, the list is quite exhaustive as expected in this segment, the Discovery Sport does come with a massive panoramic sunroof, ambient lights, driver condition monitor, wireless charging, lane departure assistance, powered and memory seats in the front for both the driver and the co-driver, air cabin ionization, 4G Connectivity, InControl Remote App to control your Discovery Sport, and the biggest talking point being the Clear Sight Interior Rear-View Mirror, we saw it first on the Evoque too.
One biggest advantage that the Discovery Sport always had over others was its 5+2 seating capabilities, and we are happy to report that, that configuration continues, that makes the Discovery Sport extremely flexible.
On the engine front nothing much has changed expect the fact that the new Discovery Sport now comes with BS6 compliant engine and the power and torque figures of both the petrol as well as the diesel vehicle are identical to the car it replaces.
Discovery Sport was always positioned as rugged vehicle and that positioning continues with this version to, with water wading capacity of 600 mm, it is amongst the best in the segment, and LandRover’s legendary off roading architecture continues to make its presence in this SUV too.
Available in two distinctive versions, Discovery Sport’s newly refined design emphasises the enhanced versatility of Discovery, while the Discovery Sport R-Dynamic expresses its overt sporting nature.
At INR 57.06 lacs ex-showroom price , while it may not be the cheapest SUV in the segment, but it is most rugged, versatile, utilitarian and dare we say, modern SUV in it’s class, which looks and drives like an SUV.
